t-minus one week!

One week from today I will have already been traveling for 11.5 hours making my way to Uganda!

Its absolutely crazy.  I still have lots of little things to get...including a nightgown... I dont think anyone realizes how impossible it is to find a nightgown that is 1) not flannel 2) below my knees  and 3) fits someone who weighs less than 500+ pounds.  Any suggestions, are greatly appreciated.

Also, packing for unknowns is way harder than I thought it would be.  I have piles of clothes labeled: potential Uganda clothes, maybe but probably not, i think im going to bring this, and i have some shoes and a dress that is a for sure.

If you feel led, prayers are also greatly appreciated :) and for Logan too...who is dealing with the stomach flu :(

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

Airborne!

I am currently cruising above 10,000 feet from Atlanta to Boston and wont be landing for at least another hour...

To back track a bit, last week seems like a year ago because of everything that happened.  Finals were a bit rough, cleaning out my room and packing up my life in the middle of the school year was weird, and saying good byes were not fun and still don't seem real yet.

This past weekend was a much needed get away, forget about finals exciting little adventure to Monterey, CA with my best friend Risa Tillman.  We ended up being graciously taken in by the Tillman's family friends Rob and Billie and their dog Bailey.  We packed a lot into four days and the best part was that the constant rain storm did not stop us one bit!

In this past weekend we:
- watched surfers in Santa Cruz (the rumors are true, people in california really do surf all the time)
- ate at the greatest little Brazilian restaurant, Cafe Brazil
- explored Monterey which included a tour through Cannery Row and watching seals on the beach
- drove 17 mile drive around Pebble Beach with lots of stops along the way
- took in the cute cottages of Carmel and got free hand scrubs at a store downtown
- went to church with people in swim trunks and a pastor in a hawaiian shirt, definitely not something you would find in New England
- drove along the coast to Big Sur state park to see the water fall and some giant red woods
- toured Carmel Mission (not as exciting as you'd think...)
- took the scenic route to San Francisco
- walked along the Golden Gate Bridge
- ate in little Italy, drove through China town, Choit tower, Castro, and saw some great victorian houses

And finally, Risa and I got travel to the east coast together which was a fun first for us and will definitely not be the last.

Here are some pictures!

First Blog Post

Well, this is the first blog I have ever had and the first post I have ever posted.  So to start I guess I should say thank you for reading, I hope what I have to say over the next five months (at least) is interesting for you... Third, this is probably going to be my main form of communication in less than a month because I don't think I will have that much internet time while im in Uganda and I want to keep as many people updated as possible.

An another note, today starts my last four days living at Gordon College, with one final down (not exactly sure it went well) and two to go! These past couple weeks have been filled with a lot of mixed emotions with trying to get paperwork done for Uganda, keeping up with school work, and wanting to spend time with friends knowing that I wont have that opportunity for awhile.  The beginning of last week started off with me dreading going abroad but I am getting more ready and excited with everyday!  I can't believe this is actually happening because this is something I have been hypothetically planning since the end of my junior year in high school.  I still dont think it has fully hit me yet, and probably wont until I step off the plane in Entebbe and I'm hit with the 70 degree warmth and sunshine as well as immediately sticking out like a sore thumb.

Agenda for the next few weeks:

  • 12.15 - Leadership final and Principles of Management Final
    • last girls group for at least 4 months :(
  • 12.16 - leave Gordon hopefully by noonish, and have the afternoon to unpack and relax at home with Logan and my family
  • 12.17 - get to Logan airport by 4:30am to jet set cross country and meet up with my best friend and greatest traveling companion Risa Tillman.  Cali here we come!
  • 12.21 - fly home from my california mini adventure with just enough time to prep for Christmas
  • 12.24 - annual Christmas Eve party at our house with beautiful new front steps (good job daddy) and real candles on the tree
  • 12.15 - CHRISTMAS DAY! (praying for snow)
  • 12.28 - Logan comes to spend time for my last week
  • 12.31 - annual new year's eve party at the cape house with family and Sinter Klaas
  • 1.5.11 - I leave Logan airport on a 6am flight for Uganda (stops in Chicago, DC (Dulles), and Amsterdam along the way)
Time until Uganda Life: 23 days and counting

Prayer Requests: safety and the ability to bond with the family I will be living with...and nerves. :)
